Free SHS Is Ghana's Only Antidote To Increasing Levels Of Crime, Nana Obiri Boahen. 49

Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party has defended his assertion that government’s flagship policy, Free Senior High School (SHS), holds the antidote to the increasing crime levels in the country.

Nana Obiri Boahen, told Nhyira Fm’s Papa Nyameke, that although it is possible for university products to commit crime, it is rare to see a University graduate rob people at knife point.

He explained that the majority of convicted inmates on charges of deadly crimes have low levels of education.

“Whilst Interior Ministry, statistics collated, suggested most of the inmates on the charge of armed robbery, murder cases and other severe crime cases had low level of education.

“Though possible, it’s very rare to see a University graduate attacking someone with a knife to take their possessions”.

His reaction comes in the wake of the murder of Mfantseman MP, Ekow Quansah Hayford, by armed robbers.

Lawyer Obiri Boahen who hails from Sunyani East emphasized that, when Free SHS is maintained and extended to Higher Educational levels, severe crimes would be reduced.

‘If we are able sustain the free SHS for three to five years, then extend it to free tertiary education, armed robbery and other crimes will be reduced drastically’. He said.
