In this 1948 photo, after the end of World War II, we see four children seated and a sign beside them indicating they were for sale.
The pregnant mother of her fifth child hides her face. Photography appeared at The Vidette-Messenger in Valparaiso, Indiana for the first time.
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Chalifoux were being evicted from their home, the situation of unemployment and despair caused the situation of selling their children, food had been scarce in the Chalifoux house for some time.
Rumor has it that the mother was paid to assemble the photo, but in the end the children were actually sold.
