FrimpongThe Managing Director of the Tema Oil Refinery, Asante Berko has resigned over bribery allegations against him.
Mr. Asante Berko tendered in his resignation to the President, Nana Akufo-Addo, on Wednesday, April 15.
President Akufo-Addo has also accepted his resignation through a release signed by the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin
The MD has been cited in a civil suit by the Securities and Exchange Commission in the US for the alleged bribes.
The US SEC claims in its lawsuit filed on Monday that, Asante Berko, a former executive at the Goldman’s London subsidiary, facilitated up to $4.5million to help a Turkish company to win a contract for a power plant.
The said contract was approved in 2015, during Ghana’s chronic power crisis.
Responding to the allegations On Tuesday which received vast media coverage, Mr. Berko, said in a release that the SEC’s claims are “false.”
He denied claims by US regulators that while serving as an official of Goldman Sachs, he arranged a $4.5 million for a Turkish company to bribe Ghanaian government officials.
“I state categorically that I have not paid any bribes to government officials, Members of Parliament nor any officials of Parliament,” maintained.
Rather he said he only got $2million as arrangee fee.
