Police in Akwa Ibom rescue 20 Ghanaians trafficked to Uyo after joint operation with INTERPOL.

Nigerian police have rescued 20 Ghanaian nationals, 10 males and 10 females, who were victims of human trafficking in Akwa Ibom State.

The operation was carried out by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command following a formal request for assistance from the Ghana Police Service and INTERPOL.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, confirmed the rescue in a statement issued in Uyo on Wednesday. She explained that operatives stormed a compound in Obio Etoi village, Uyo Local Government Area, at around 4:17 p.m. on Monday, August 18, 2025, acting on credible intelligence.

“On August 18, 2025, operatives of the command successfully rescued 20 Ghanaians trafficked to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The victims, made up of 10 males and 10 females, were rescued from a compound in Obio Etoi village,” the statement read.

According to DSP John, the victims appeared disoriented and were unable to provide meaningful information to investigators, raising suspicions that they may have been hypnotized.

“The victims presently appear disoriented and have been unable to provide useful information, leading investigators to suspect they might have been hypnotised. Investigation is ongoing, and further developments will be communicated to the public,” she added.

The rescued Ghanaians are currently receiving care while investigations continue to uncover those behind the trafficking syndicate. Authorities say updates will be shared as the case develops.
