Dating and relationships in the recent past took a nose dive into the world of social media in the form of various platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Telegram, and Whatsapp. From uploading pictures of a date night to venting through status updates, people have resorted to social media as a form of daily communication. The problem lies in the personal communication gap — the fact that an intimate, face-to-face conversation has lost its value.
Call it a rite of passage for relationships, updating a Facebook status to ‘In A Relationship with’ is a way of marking territory. Couples in fairly new relationships tend to obsessively check their significant other’s Facebook page to see if they have made an appearance on the timeline.
You see a tweet published by your friend and you innocently retweet it without realising the damage you’ve inflicted on your relationship. The misunderstanding begins when your significant other misinterprets the re-tweet as an action of attraction towards the friend.
Couples are more inclined to stalk their significant others on various social media platforms to observe their activity. Some go as far as reading personal messages and keeping a track of their likes. Social media has a way of introducing suspicion and mistrust in a relationship, worsening matters between a couple.
Couples bicker and quarrel; that’s no mystery. With the current trend of revealing private tidbits about oneself, the couple resorts to a social media platform and vents about the fight they just had. Some updates are in the form of a depressing song and some go down the abusive route.
Despite not having spoken for a week, couples upload pictures or status updates to show how much they love each other. A way to maintain their couple ranking socially, couples are affectionate on social media to show the world how strong they are going.
Instead, have an open and honest conversation with your significant other to avoid unnecessary suspicions and squabbles. Take a break from the complexities of the social media world and enjoy each other’s company without the continuous ‘beeps’ and ‘pings’.
