Political Scientist, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has said if the country wants to see an end to the coronavirus pandemic, both the leaders and citizens ought to put a stop to corruption.
Like corruption, Professor Gyampo believes other acts like lack of patriotism, intolerance, and abuse of power are not pleasing to God.
According to him, our prayers are not yielding the desired results hence it is time for a change in attitudes as a country, only then will God intervene.
Since the outbreak of the pandemic, the country has held national prayers, churches have organised intercessory prayers and religious leaders have met the leadership of the country to pray to God to intervene and bring it to an end.
Despite this, the country’s case count keeps rising from 2 to over 2,000 in 50 days including 17 deaths and over 200 recoveries.
Professor Gyampo is convinced, “as a nation, we have prayed enough, both privately and corporately to God, to deliver us from the COVID-19 Pandemic. But the cases are rising. Maybe, we may have to rethink our individual and national character of corruption, intolerance, politics of disrespect, lack of patriotism, disregard for laws, abuse of power, and our general inclinations that do not make us revere God. I am sure if we re-shape our character, God will intervene.”
“In Isaiah 65:24, God says, before we pray, He will answer. Why is this so? To my mind, it is always a certain mood, character, and attitude that compels us to pray. Once we get the character and attitude right, God, who knows, the heart, may want to answer us even before we rattle all the tongues.”
“So, I think we must build our character first because sometimes, that’s all we need to attract our breakthroughs, not prayer. You can pray from heaven to earth. You won’t go anywhere, without character. This is a blunt truth that we must contend with. God is not a magician.”
The Professor, who is also the head of European Studies at the University of Ghana, advised social media users, particularly, political party footsoldiers, to be decorous and civil in their interactions since the very people they disrespect may be the ones to assist them at some point in time in their lives.
He entreated people to go beyond relying on prayers and network more while treating others with respect as the Bible directs.
“Indeed, prayer is good, but prayer isn’t the answer to everything. As far as possible, without surrender, the Bible admonishes us to live in peace with all men. To my mind, this is about NETWORKING, and how it can change destinies, not prayer.”
“Under the guise of partisan politics, and under the facelessness of Social Media, we insult people who have what it takes to help alter our destinies. We hide behind the arrogance of Social Media to pretend all is well with us when we actually have nothing, and actually need help from others. Without a character of humility, no one can help us.”
“Treat people well, and do not look down on anyone, for your angels won’t come as angels. They will come as human beings. It was the “common” maid of Naaman, who told him where to get healing to his leprosy. Naaman may have visited good hospitals, but never knew the solution to his problem was in the mouth of his maid. I don’t think Naaman’s maid would have volunteered the information on where healing could be sourced for her master if she was maltreated in the house.”
“Don’t only focus on prayer. Have a character that treats people well, because sometimes, the solutions to our problems are trapped in the mouths of “common” people.”
