A 35-year-old man suspected armed robber popularly known as Shankiki has been shot dead in a shootout with a combined team of police personnel from the Western Regional Criminal Investigations Department and officers from the SWAT Accra.
The suspect, who is linked with the recent armed robberies and murder of a 61 year old man in Takoradi was gunned down in Elmina on the Takoradi – Cape Coast road.
Speaking to Connect FM’s Ewurama Smith at the Western regional police head quarters in Sekondi, the regional head of Public Affairs, DSP Olivia Ewurabena Adiku disclosed that around 8pm on Tuesday, April 14, 2021, in an intelligence-led operation to arrest those wanted for their alleged involvement in the Takoradi market circle robbery on April 12, 2021, they closed in on the suspects at Elmina, along the Cape Coast- Takoradi road.
“In an attempt to arrest the suspects, they engaged police in a shootout but one of them later identified as shankiki aged about 30yrs, was gunned down. Two others managed to escape on one other motor bike. One motorbike blue in color with registration no. M-20 GW 6060 with the last zero covered with a sticker to read GW 606 was recovered from the scene.
“Also, the Police later located the hideout of the suspects and a search was conducted. one live and one spent AK 47 ammunition, a live tortoise and a talisman were recovered”.
She further disclosed that a 25 year old man, Inusah Fuseini who was met at the hideout was arrested for interrogation.
In the meantime, the body of the deceased suspected robber has been sent to the police hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy while efforts are underway to arrest those on the run.
DSP Olivia Ewurabena Adiku commended those who gave the information on the suspoect and called for more leads to arrest the two other suspects. She reiterated the GHC10,000 bounty for information leading to the arrest of the culprits.
