Blows at Assembly Members Meeting as COVID-19 government relief items meant to cushion the effects diverted

Report reaching Ghanatodayonline.com indicates half of the food aid has been stolen in various municipal Assemblies in the Ashanti region.

According to investigations conducted by our reporter Isaac Nsiah Foster, up to half of food aid valued at five million Ghana Cedis (GH5, 000, 000) is being diverted through a web of partners in some municipal and district assemblies across the country.

To ascertain the truth Isaac Nsiah Foster visited some of these municipal and district assemblies.

Among these is Old Tafo municipal assembly in Ashanti region where a section of the market traders confirmed they were supplied with eggs at very cheaper prices.

Some of the market traders stressed one Charles Boakye “special aid” to the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon Fred Obeng Owusu the government appointee was the one who led the supposed government relief items meant to be given to the poor and vulnerable in the society on operation to sell hundreds of create of eggs at Tafo market.

Explaining what could trigger the blows at the assembly members meeting held at the Tafo New Patriotic Party (NPP), constituency office, Mr. Owusu,  assembly member for Tafo Nhyiaeso and CEO of Royal Nursing Training College, stressed on Monday 4, May 2020 at the Tafo NPP constituency chairman Moses Parker Donkor held a meeting with selected assembly members to resolve the issue of the diversion of government relief items meant to be given to the poor and the vulnerable during the lockdown, which according to him some of the diversion items were found in one of his colleague assemblyman, Mr Bashiru Gambo’s house.

“Those items found in Gambo’s house were to be shared among assembly members but I refused to take them and allowed my unit committee members to take to serve as evidence” Owusu King said.

He further disclosed in order not to make the issue spread to meet the disgrace of the Tafo municipal assembly he was asked to make a statement during the meeting.


” When I started to talk about how the relief items meant to be given to the poor and the vulnerable during the lockdown got to his house because all legal relief items were to be shared at Tafo Methodist church ministry and not any member’s house I got videos of it, Honourable Gambo who was sitting right behind me started throwing blows at my face and around my neck” Mr. Owusu King disclosed.

Mr. Owusu King from the meeting ground proceeded to Tafo-Pakrono police station and lodged a complaint after which he was given a medical form to go to any government hospital for treatment.


Mr. Bashiru Gambo also claimed to have a video of some assembly members who were having a meeting at X5 pub now Golden Eye Restaurant at CPC in Kumasi to make the administration ungovernable for the MCE Mr. Fred Obeng Owusu.

According to Mr. Gambo assembly member for Moro market the victim Mr. Owusu King, a colleague assembly man has been calling him thief which he Gambo considered it be unfortunate and warned him to stop calling him thief.

Mr. Bashiru Gambo explaining what caused the assault, he attributed the incident to Mr. Owusu King’s gross disrespectful act shown during the meeting at NPP constituency office.

However, Tafo-Pankrono police have initiated investigation into the case after taking cautionary statement from the suspected assembly member Mr. Bashiru Gambo.
