EPA officials and journalists injured in road accident during anti-galamsey mission in Ashanti Region

A group of journalists and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officials on an anti-illegal mining mission in the Ashanti Region were involved in a serious road accident during their return from an operation around Obuasi.

The joint task force had embarked on a mission to clamp down on illegal mining activities (galamsey) in parts of the Obuasi area. However, the operation reportedly took a dangerous turn when the team was attacked by a group of miners at Dadwene, a community near Obuasi, forcing them to retreat for safety.

As the convoy made its way through Afari, one of the vehicles was involved in a ghastly accident that left several people injured. Reports indicate that two journalists are in critical condition, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Among those caught up in the incident was Ibrahim Abubakar, the Ashanti Regional Correspondent for Media General, who fortunately escaped serious harm. Another journalist from Adom News was also part of the team that came under attack and later suffered from the crash.

Emergency responders swiftly moved the injured victims to a nearby hospital for treatment, while the authorities have assured that investigations are underway into both the attack and the accident. The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of journalists and officials involved in field operations against illegal mining.
