AdubianewsGhana has renewed its commitment to Pan-African solidarity and regional cooperation, expressing unwavering support for the Republic of Niger and fellow members of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
Representing President John Dramani Mahama in Niamey over the weekend, Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Alban S.K. Bagbin delivered Ghana’s message at the official launch of Niger’s Conseil Consultatif de la Refondation (Consultative Council for the Rebuilding of Niger).
The establishment of the Council marks a pivotal step in Niger’s national renewal efforts amid persistent insecurity and socio-political instability. Ghana commended the people of Niger for their resolve to pursue inclusive development and participatory governance, despite ongoing threats posed by terrorist activities in the Sahel region.
Speaker Bagbin, in his address, reaffirmed Ghana’s strategic alignment with AES nations and highlighted the country’s diplomatic engagement in the Sahel, including the appointment of a Special Envoy to the region. He described Niger’s newly inaugurated Council as a symbol of unity and institutional reform, echoing Ghana’s own political transformation journey of the 1990s through a broad-based consultative approach.
He noted that Ghana’s current constitutional review process, under the leadership of President Mahama, provides an opportunity for mutual learning and collaboration. As part of this commitment, Ghana extended an invitation to Niger’s Consultative Council to observe the process and participate in knowledge exchange on governance reform and democratic consolidation.
The message also underscored the shared burdens faced by West African states, such as youth unemployment, violent extremism, economic vulnerability, and climate stress, urging greater inter-African cooperation as a solution to these pressing challenges.
Ghana’s reaffirmed support comes at a time when the Sahel region is undergoing significant political and institutional shifts. The endorsement of Niger’s Council is being seen as a strong diplomatic gesture rooted in shared historical ties, mutual respect, and a vision for a peaceful and integrated Africa.
