Ghanaian rapper Guru NKZ has shed light on the growing influence of politics in student leadership, describing the Student Representative Council (SRC) as both a political and influential platform.
According to him, political parties often show interest in SRC elections because of the power and exposure the platform offers.
“The SRC is a political and influential space, so there is often interest that rises in it from the political parties,” Guru explained.
He, however, cautioned that such political involvement should not override the main purpose of the SRC, which is to serve students’ welfare and needs.
“If the larger interest of the students is not achieved, it becomes a problem,” he added.
Guru’s comment highlights how political interference in student governance can shift focus from leadership and advocacy to partisan interests, a concern that continues to spark debate across Ghana’s tertiary institutions.
