Hassan Tampuli speaking at a political gathering in Gushegu on NPP unity

The Member of Parliament for Gushegu, Hassan Tampuli, has once again underscored the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) long-standing commitment to national unity, pushing back against claims that seek to associate the party with any single ethnic or religious group.

Speaking to party supporters in Gushegu during a political engagement in support of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential campaign, Mr Tampuli said the NPP’s identity is firmly grounded in inclusiveness and constitutional principles that reject all forms of sectional politics.

According to him, Ghana’s democratic framework clearly outlaws discrimination based on tribe, religion, or regional origin, a principle that has shaped both the country’s political culture and the ideological foundation of the NPP.

He explained that the party’s philosophical roots can be traced back to the Avoidance of Discrimination Act of 1957, enacted under Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s administration, which banned political organisations formed on ethnic, religious, or sectional lines. This position, he added, was later entrenched in Article 55(4) of the 1992 Constitution.

Mr Tampuli further highlighted that the NPP emerged from a diverse alliance of political traditions, including the National Liberation Movement, the Northern People’s Party, the Togoland Congress, the Muslim Action Party, and the Ga Shifimo Kpee Party. These groups initially merged under the United Party before eventually evolving into what is now the New Patriotic Party.

He cautioned against deliberate attempts by what he described as “little minds” to distort the party’s history or push narrow agendas, stressing that such narratives run contrary to both the Constitution and the spirit in which the NPP was formed.

“The NPP has always been, and will continue to be, a truly national party,” Mr Tampuli stated, reaffirming the party’s resolve to uphold unity, inclusiveness, and broad national participation.
