President John Mahama is set to swear in Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie today, Monday, November 17, marking his formal assumption of office as Ghana’s Chief Justice. The ceremony comes just days after Parliament voted overwhelmingly to approve his nomination.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie was nominated on September 23, 2025, with President Mahama citing his vast judicial experience spanning the High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court, as well as decades of dedicated service on the Bench.
He has served as Acting Chief Justice since April 22, 2025, stepping into the role following the suspension and eventual dismissal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on November 10, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie assured lawmakers of his commitment to bipartisan leadership, strengthening judicial independence, and improving public access to justice.
Parliament later endorsed his appointment on November 13, with 163 MPs voting in favour and 69 opposing, thereby clearing the path for today’s swearing-in.
