Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie faces parliamentary vetting for Chief Justice position

Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie will appear before Parliament’s Appointments Committee today, Monday, November 10, 2025, for vetting as Chief Justice, following his nomination by President John Dramani Mahama.

According to an official notice issued by David Sebastian Damoah, Director of Media Relations at Parliament, the session is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. and will be open to public and media scrutiny.

The vetting process will allow Members of Parliament to thoroughly assess Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s judicial record, philosophy, and proposed vision for Ghana’s justice system. The committee’s report will later guide Parliament’s decision to approve or reject his nomination.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s nomination comes in the wake of the dismissal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, who had served as Chief Justice since 2023. His potential appointment is seen as a defining moment for Ghana’s judiciary, particularly as public interest in judicial independence and accountability continues to rise.

The process, however, has not been without controversy. On Friday, November 7, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin filed a motion urging Parliament to suspend the vetting until court cases involving the former Chief Justice are concluded. He cautioned that proceeding could interfere with pending judicial matters and breach constitutional procedure.

His request was dismissed by Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, who ruled that there was no constitutional or procedural justification to halt Parliament’s work. He warned that granting such a motion would “set a dangerous precedent,” stressing that the legislature must act independently of the judiciary.

The vetting of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie is expected to draw significant attention from both sides of the House and the wider public, as Parliament evaluates a potential new leader for the judiciary at a time of heightened debate over the rule of law and institutional balance.
