A young lady arrested at Benkasa in the Berekum West District for engaging in illegal mining (galamsey) has pleaded for mercy after being told she could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
The arrest occurred during an anti-galamsey operation led by the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Berekum West, Hon. Collins Asomah, with support from the District Coordinating Director, Mr. Charles Asamoah, and the Berekum Police Command.
The joint task force stormed the illegal mining site following intelligence reports of ongoing galamsey activities in the area. Several miners were apprehended, and equipment used for the illicit operations was seized by authorities.
Officials have reiterated their commitment to clamping down on illegal mining, emphasizing that offenders will face the full rigors of the law as part of ongoing efforts to protect the country’s water bodies and environment.
