President John Dramani Mahama delivering 2026 State of the Nation Address

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana’s economy is regaining stability and returning to growth, declaring before Parliament that the country is back on track after a difficult recovery period.

Delivering the 2026 State of the Nation Address on Friday, February 27, he acknowledged the hardships faced by citizens but expressed confidence that government interventions are beginning to produce measurable results.

“Recovery would not come easily, but I was also clear that I would stop at nothing to turn this situation around and bring relief to Ghanaians,” he told lawmakers.

Fiscal Discipline at the Core of Recovery

Rather than quick fixes, the President said his administration prioritised fiscal discipline and structural reforms to restore credibility and order to public finances.

He explained that decisive measures — including tighter spending controls, improved reporting of government payables, and a comprehensive audit of 2024 financial commitments — were necessary to halt economic decline.

According to him, these actions have already begun to yield significant outcomes.

“Our first order of business was to halt the economic haemorrhage and restore order to our public finances,” he stated.

Tough Choices to Restore Stability

President Mahama reminded Parliament that difficult but necessary decisions were required to rebuild confidence in the economy.

He emphasised that his government deliberately chose discipline over waste and stability over speculation, laying a foundation for sustained growth.

“Today, I can say with confidence: Ghana is back. Ghana is working again. And Ghana is open for business,” he declared.

Positive Indicators Emerging

Highlighting improving economic fundamentals, the President said the direction toward sustained acceleration is becoming clearer.

He noted that reforms introduced since his administration took office are strengthening the economy and positioning Ghana for long-term progress and development.

Renewed Hope Ahead of Independence Anniversary

As Ghana approaches its 69th Independence Anniversary, President Mahama said the nation has renewed reason for optimism.

He stressed that the government’s “Resetting Ghana” agenda is delivering results through sound policy, responsible governance and inclusive growth.

“Our nation is on the runway; it is in takeoff mode. And you are all advised to fasten your seat belts,” he concluded.
