FrimpongA 95-year-old Ghanaian Second World War veteran is doing the unthinkable by walking 2 miles everyday for seven days as a fundraiser for COVID-19 charities.
Private Joseph Hammond is hoping to raise an amount of US$600,000 for frontline workers and vulnerable veterans across Africa.
The veteran was part of soldiers who fought with the British army in Burma, in the Gold Coast Regiment of the Royal West African Frontier Force.
In a BBC’s report filed by Thomas Naadi in Accra, the veteran said he has joined the fight in a different type of war to help health workers defeat Covid-19 on the continent.
According to the retired soldier, he is inspired by veteran British Second World War veteran Captain Tom Moore, who embarked on a similar initiative.
As at Wednesday, May 20, 2020, the crowdfunding account set up for the charity walk had accrued a little over 1,600 pounds.
The walk which started on Tuesday, May 19, is expected to end on Tuesday, May 26.
