Police and residents at the scene of a reported MoMo vendor death in Hohoe

Residents of Torkoni/Blave in the Hohoe Municipality have been left stunned following the reported death of a mobile money (MoMo) vendor under circumstances authorities are currently investigating.

The incident came to light at about 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 8, 2026, when concerns were raised after the vendor could not be reached for several hours. The deceased, whose identity has not yet been officially confirmed, was well known in the area for operating a MoMo business and selling basic household items such as toothpaste, sponges, and brushes at the Hohoe main lorry station.

According to Mr Derek Adzoe, Assembly Member for the Torkoni/Blave Electoral Area, information gathered indicates that the vendor had received a series of phone calls earlier in the day. During the calls, the deceased was allegedly being pressured to pay money and reportedly indicated that the payment would be made through mobile money or electronic cash (e-cash).

Mr Adzoe told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that sources further revealed that some individuals later went to the vendor’s residence, knocked on the door, and issued threats to report him to the police. He noted that the deceased’s brother later confirmed that his sibling appeared distressed after receiving the calls but did not explain the cause.

The situation escalated when the brother left for town and returned to find the room locked from the inside. Repeated attempts to reach the deceased by phone were unsuccessful.

After the door was eventually forced open, the vendor was found dead.

Mr Adzoe, who was present at the scene, said officers from the Ghana Police Service were promptly informed and subsequently conveyed the body to the morgue for preservation and further investigations.

Police have begun inquiries to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the death.
