The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has warned that internal division, not political competition, poses the greatest threat to the party’s recovery following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
In a New Year message delivered on January 1, 2026, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong cautioned presidential hopefuls against engaging in factional politics as the party prepares for a highly competitive internal contest. He stressed that the NPP’s strength has historically been rooted in unity and discipline, not in the dominance of internal blocs.
Reflecting on the party’s loss in the December 7, 2024 elections, Kodua admitted the outcome remains painful but rejected suggestions that the party is weakened beyond repair. According to him, the NPP has endured difficult moments in the past and has consistently emerged stronger when members rallied together around shared values and purpose.
He disclosed that the party has already commenced a structured rebuilding process, citing ongoing constitutional reforms, the establishment of the Patriotic Institute for training and research, and preparations for upcoming internal elections, including the presidential primary.
Kodua assured party members that the leadership is committed to conducting free, fair and transparent elections, noting that reconciliation and unity will be central pillars of the rebuilding agenda as the party positions itself for future political contests.
He also commended the Minority in Parliament, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, for remaining resolute in opposition, and praised the party’s legal team for defending the NPP’s interests during what he described as trying times.
Calling on grassroots members to remain hopeful and engaged, Kodua urged supporters not to succumb to despair despite the loss of power. He stressed that rebuilding the party will demand humility, sacrifice and collective effort, rather than loyalty to factions.
He reaffirmed the NPP’s commitment to Ghana’s democratic development and appealed to party members and the wider public to embrace peace, unity and renewal as the party charts its path forward.
