The flagbearer of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Brigitte Dzogbenuku says the two main political parties in the country consider her party as a threat.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Personality Profile, Brigitte Dzogbenuku says the two major parties, the ruling New Patriotic Party and the Opposition, National Democratic Congress are right to be scared of the PPP, as their widening support base is indicative of the fact that the Ghanaian populace is looking for an alternative.
She said: “The PPP is alive. The two parties are actually scared of us. We came third. Ghanaians today are saying we are tired of the NDC and the NPP, I’m sure you’ve heard it. So it wasn’t a joke. In 2012, PPP was a new party, it had 64,000 votes…In 2016 we doubled that in spite of the fact that we were disqualified.
According to her, considering the hurdles they’ve had to overcome and the steady progress their relatively young party has gained in the last 2 General Elections, the PPP should not be considered as a joke, but rather seen as a keen contender in the elections.
“So if we were disqualified in 2016 and yet we came back on the ballot paper almost at the end of October and still managed – we only managed nearly one month or less of active campaigning because everybody thought we were off the ballot paper- and we were still able to double our vote, are we a joke? We are not a joke.
This, for the PPP was a win.
“In fact, it was a win for us because we doubled our votes from 2012 and that is what we want.”
Dzogbenuku says she wants Ghanaians to recognise the PPP as a worthy alternative to the two major parties who she says are “taking Ghanaians for a ride”.
“We want people to recognize that there is an alternative party, a third party. Because what is happening is the two parties are now taking Ghanaians for a ride.”
Brigitte Dzogbenuku hopes to emerge victorious in this year’s general elections to become Ghana’s premier female president.
