Prophet Dr. Kofi Oduro, Senior Pastor of the Alabaster International Ministry, has thrown his support behind growing calls for a presidential pardon for William Ato Essien, the jailed founder of the now-defunct Capital Bank.
The call aligns with an earlier appeal from the Head of Mission for the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council, urging a formal petition for clemency.
Addressing his congregation, Prophet Oduro described Ato Essien as “too intelligent to be in prison,” adding that the former banker is currently battling health issues. He stressed that jailing someone with Essien’s business acumen is a loss to the nation.
“Ato Essien is a young man with the capacity to create wealth, build businesses, and contribute meaningfully to national development,” he said.
Prophet Oduro passionately appealed to President John Mahama, asking him to consider a pardon that would allow Essien to recover and redirect his talents toward rebuilding the economy.
His comments add to the mounting public debate surrounding Ato Essien’s imprisonment, with many divided over whether his past offenses should disqualify him from a second chance or if his capabilities justify redemption through state mercy.
