Majority of Ghanaians are calling on the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to make obvious the significance of wearing nose mask before they consent to the idea.
According to nose mask sellers, people they approach without mask normally tell them that unless President Akufo-Addo addresses the nation in mask, they will never succumb to the idea.
The President of Ghana during his address to the nation on COVID-19 issues, is seen on national television without mask hence the concern by some section of the public that except he is seen in a mask, they will not comply with the measures.
Mama Thick, a nose mask seller at the Pragia station in Kumasi spoke to a local media and said that such are the reflections mask vendors go through in the hands of some inconsiderate citizens.
“Whenever we approach people to buy nose masks, all they say is unless President Akufo-Addo put on a mask, they will never play a part in the wearing of nose or face covers”. she said.
“You cannot compare yourself to the president because you have a life to protect and for the safety of others,” she added.
However, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has enforced mandatory measures that people who default the wearing of masks should be arrested and fined yet some defaulters justify themselves when caught.
Mama Thick urged security personnel to toughen their mandate and avoid pardoning people who give flimsy excuses.
Maame Konadu, also a nose mask seller asserted that the ‘rejection of the mask’ is putting lives at risk explaining that majority of persons without covers protest of discomforts while others call on government to give it out freely which she thinks is not possible.
“They give excuses that the president should give it out free of charge. We are doing our best to make provisions available yet the response from buyers is very poor”.
Konadu called on the authorities to compel Ghanaians to purchase the masks and observe the social distancing rule to curb the novel virus.
