FrimpongTHE PARAMOUNT (Ga Mantse) of the Ga State in the Greater Accra Region,
King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has noted with grave concern the brutal torture and murder of a 90-year- old woman, Madam Akua Denteh at Kafaba community in the East Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region on Thursday July 23, 2020.
Warning that this heinous act should not be tolerated and allowed by any chief and traditional office holder to happen in their communities in the country, the overlord of Ga State stated that in a strong worded press statement issued yesterday that he was shocked to his bone when he saw the video, which has gone viral, when Madam Akua Denteh was seen being publicly and brutally flogged by other women and men based on accusations of witchcraft labeled on the old woman by a fetish priest.
The Ga Mantse noted that he He joins many horrified Ghanaians and institutions including the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, former President John Dramani Mahama, First Lady Rebecca, former President, Flt Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, amongst several others to condemn in no uncertain terms this act of intolerance and called for justice and appropriate sanctions against all the perpetrators of this inhuman act.
King Tackie Teiko Tsuru Il who was passionate about the fundamental human rights and freedoms was hopeful that this heart-breaking act will never be repeated in any part of this peace loving country of “ours.”
According to him, Ghana has moved on in its democratic dispensation, adding that the laws have been passed and international conventions on fundamental human and women’s rights have been signed.
He stressed that these must be enforced to the latter, to bring positive changes to “our traditional, customary, as well as religious practices, not only for girls and women but also for our boys and men.”
The Ga Mantse also intimated, it is the women who have always been in the forefront in the fight, and continue to fight for the betterment of us all.
“The women in our socialites have played pivotal roles in the organization and maintenance of our homes and communities. They are to be worshipped and protected and not brutalized, murdered and branded as witches,” he stressed.
King Tackie Teiko Tsuru I further stressed the need for Government in collaboration with civil society, close down all witch camps in the country in order to enhance fudamental human rights and freedoms of all women.
“I also call on the national security agencies to expedite efforts to arrest all the perpetrators speedily and bring them before the courts to face trial.
“Justice must be done and fast as a deterrent to those who are carrying on similar brutal acts against girls and women. I know they can,” Ga Mantse further stressed.
Consequently, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru entreated the government, traditional and religious leaders, civil society organizations and everyone born of a woman, to use this unfortunate incident as an eye opener and work jointly towards ending all forms of inhuman and obnoxious practices against girls and women, as well as all forms of gender-based violence in this Country.
