AdubianewsIn a significant move aimed at addressing youth unemployment and enhancing national security, the Ghana Police Service (GPS) and the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to recruit and train 12,000 young Ghanaians as Community Police Assistants.
The MoU, signed on May 20, 2025, marks a strategic partnership between the two institutions to support law enforcement operations while providing meaningful employment opportunities for the country’s youth.
Under this initiative, selected applicants will undergo comprehensive training in basic policing, community engagement, and intelligence gathering. Once trained, they will be deployed across the country to assist in various policing activities, particularly in underserved and high-risk communities.
The collaboration is part of a broader effort by the government to empower young people and strengthen community policing structures. Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, expressed the government’s commitment to youth development and national security, emphasizing that this initiative reflects the administration’s dedication to creating safer communities while addressing the unemployment crisis.
Malik Basintale, Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency, described the agreement as a win-win for both the Ghana Police Service and Ghanaian youth. He stressed that beyond employment, the program provides a platform for young people to actively contribute to peacebuilding and the protection of life and property in their communities.
“The MoU is not just about giving jobs; it’s about giving purpose, about building a network of young individuals who are committed to making their communities safer,” Basintale said.
Hon. George Opare Addo, Minister for Youth Employment and Development, expressed his gratitude to the Minister for the Interior for the opportunity and pledged his ministry’s continued support for the initiative.
This initiative is one of the largest youth-focused security employment programs in recent years and is expected to have a ripple effect across sectors by improving public trust in law enforcement and reducing crime through greater community engagement.
