AdubianewsThe Ghana National Council for Private Schools (GNACOPS) has confirmed that the government will pay GHS 1,500 per term as tuition for students placed in private Senior High Schools (SHSs) under the Free SHS pilot program, starting in the 2025/2026 academic year.
The announcement was made by GNACOPS Executive Director, Enoch Nana Gyetuah, during an appearance on TV3’s “Hot Issues” program on Sunday, June 1, 2025.
This initiative marks a significant expansion of the Free SHS policy, which was initially implemented in 2017 to provide free secondary education in public schools. The inclusion of private SHSs aims to increase access to quality education and reduce the burden on public institutions.
The GHS 1,500 per term tuition fee will be paid directly to participating private SHSs for each student enrolled under the program. This move is expected to enhance educational opportunities for students and support the sustainability of private educational institutions.
The pilot program will commence in the 2025/2026 academic year, with GNACOPS overseeing the implementation in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. Further details regarding the selection criteria for participating schools and students are expected to be announced in due course.
This development signifies the government’s commitment to expanding access to secondary education and supporting private educational institutions through the Free SHS policy
