The 2025 BET Awards took place on Monday night (June 9) at the Peacock Theatre in L.A. Live, delivering a night filled with memorable performances and historic wins. Kendrick Lamar entered the evening as the most nominated artist and emerged as the biggest winner, securing five awards from ten nominations.
During the live telecast, Lamar was honored with the prestigious Album of the Year award for GNX. He also took home awards for Best Male Hip Hop Artist, Best Collaboration for “Luther” featuring SZA, Video of the Year for “Not Like Us,” and Video Director of the Year (shared with Dave Free).
Representing Nigeria, Afropop star Ayra Starr made history as the only African winner at this year’s ceremony, claiming the coveted Best International Act award. Her win marked a significant milestone for West African representation on the global stage.
However, the night was bittersweet for many African fans, as several notable nominees did not take home awards. South Africa’s Dlala Thukzin, Maglera Doe Boy, TxC, and Nigeria’s Shallipopi missed out in the Best New International Act category, which was won by Brazil’s Ajuliacosta.
Additionally, Nigerian superstar Burna Boy, who was nominated for Best Male Hip Hop Artist, was defeated by Kendrick Lamar. In the same category, American artists dominated, reaffirming Lamar’s strong presence.
In the Best New Artist category, African hopeful Ayra Starr was edged out by American artist Leon Thomas. Despite these outcomes, the evening was marked by celebrated wins across various categories, highlighting the global reach and diversity of the BET Awards.
Lamar’s dominant sweep cements his ongoing influence in global Black music. Nigerian sensation Ayra Starr also made a notable impact, winning Best International Act ahead of strong competitors such as Ghana’s Black Sherif, South Africa’s Tyla, and the UK’s Ezra Collective.
