Ghanaian actor and Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, has reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the country’s rent challenges by pushing for the enforcement of the Rent Control Act.

In a recent post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Dumelo assured Ghanaians, particularly the youth, that steps are being taken to make rent more affordable and accessible.

Referencing a promise he made during his 2020 campaign, Dumelo stated, “I remember making this statement, and it’s being worked on.”

He confirmed that discussions have already begun with the ministry responsible for housing, adding that updates will be shared as progress is made.

In his original tweet dated August 17, 2020, Dumelo condemned the common practice of landlords demanding two years’ rent in advance, describing it as unfair and unrealistic given the state of the economy.

He argued that tenants should be required to pay no more than six months’ rent upfront. “How can we, especially the youth, survive in an economy where we have to pay two years’ rent upfront? Not right. We dey bleed,” he wrote.

Dumelo’s renewed focus on rent reform comes at a time when many Ghanaians continue to struggle with high living costs and housing insecurity. His advocacy has drawn attention to the urgent need for practical solutions to ease the burden of rent, particularly for young people entering the job market and trying to establish stable living conditions.
