AdubianewsDeputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has thrown his weight behind the party’s decision to hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026, arguing that the early timeline is a strategic move to boost both domestic momentum and global engagement.
Speaking to Channel One TV on Tuesday, June 17, Haruna said the early primaries will give the chosen flagbearer a crucial head start, not just in local campaigning but in building meaningful connections with key stakeholders across the world.
“It is going to market the candidate enough, particularly in terms of building contacts with the international community, the business community, and stakeholders across the globe,” he noted. “We will have sufficient time to communicate our policies effectively and hold the government accountable.”
The announcement of the 2026 primaries follows the party’s internal constitutional review, which is focused on strengthening electoral strategy and fostering unity ahead of the 2028 general elections. Haruna described the move as a forward-thinking decision aimed at repositioning the NPP as a prepared and credible contender for power.
He also acknowledged the challenge posed by the NPP’s current minority status in Parliament, holding just 88 seats, and stressed the need for a proactive approach that goes beyond internal politics.
“We need someone who can rise above internal distractions and rally support nationally and beyond to keep the government in check,” he added.
With the clock already ticking toward the next general election, Haruna believes the NPP is setting itself up to regain public confidence, both within Ghana and on the international stage.
