A suspected female suicide bomber detonated an explosive device at a crowded fish market in Borno State, Nigeria, killing at least 12 people and injuring many more. The deadly incident occurred on Friday night in the northeastern town, authorities confirmed on Saturday.

According to Borno State police spokesperson Nahum Kenneth Daso, the attacker strapped an improvised explosive device (IED) to her body and infiltrated the market before triggering the blast. Daso said those injured in the explosion have been taken to the hospital for treatment.

Local residents estimate that more than 30 people sustained injuries in the attack. Borno State remains the epicenter of a violent insurgency led by the Islamist militant group Boko Haram.

The conflict has spanned over 16 years, claiming thousands of lives and displacing over two million people, according to humanitarian agencies.

Authorities have yet to officially name the group behind the latest attack, but the method bears hallmarks of Boko Haram’s tactics.
