Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has urged the Republic of Niger to take inspiration from Ghana’s ongoing constitutional review process as the country charts a new path toward democratic renewal and institutional strengthening.

Speaking at the official inauguration of the Conseil Consultatif de la Refondation du Niger (Consultative Council for Rebuilding Niger) over the weekend, Mr. Bagbin emphasised the importance of inclusive governance, national dialogue, and civic participation in fostering sustainable democracy across Africa.

Ghana is currently engaged in a significant review of its 1992 Constitution, spearheaded by President John Dramani Mahama, with the aim of modernising its democratic framework. The reform process seeks to address critical issues such as excessive executive power, improve institutional accountability, and increase citizen engagement in governance.

Mr. Bagbin highlighted that Ghana’s constitutional evolution is rooted in public consensus and inclusive participation—principles he believes are essential for any country, especially those emerging from political instability.

He encouraged Niger’s newly formed consultative body to explore Ghana’s reform journey, suggesting that it could benefit from observing the sessions of Ghana’s Constitutional Review Committee and exchanging insights to enrich its own process.

The Speaker further underscored the value of regional cooperation and cross-country learning in advancing democratic governance in West Africa. With both Ghana and Niger confronting shared challenges such as youth unemployment, environmental degradation, and security threats, he stressed that collaborative governance models and mutual learning are vital tools for regional progress.

Mr. Bagbin’s address reflects Ghana’s growing role in regional peacebuilding and institutional development efforts, with President Mahama’s administration leading a push for greater democratic consolidation and constitutional reform within the West African sub-region.
