Youth of Akoase confronting Chinese illegal miners over destroyed farmlands

A group of concerned youth in Akoase, a town in the Birim North District of Ghana’s Eastern Region, engaged in a tense standoff with some Chinese nationals accused of destroying local lands through illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey.

According to reports from the community, frustration has been mounting over the devastating environmental impact caused by unchecked mining operations, which have stripped the land and polluted water sources. The confrontation, which took place earlier this week, was sparked by what locals describe as the relentless encroachment and degradation of community lands by foreign miners.

In a viral video, the youth demanded an immediate halt to the mining activities and accountability for the damage already caused. The situation nearly turned violent, but was reportedly calmed by the intervention of opinion leaders and local authorities.

Residents are calling on the government and security agencies to take swift action to stop the destruction of their lands and restore order. Community members expressed concern not only about the environmental toll but also about the threat to livelihoods, farmland, and water safety.

The incident reflects a growing trend of rural communities across Ghana standing up against illegal mining, especially where foreign nationals are involved.
