The continued EOCO detention of Hanan Abdul-Wahab, despite meeting bail conditions, has sparked outrage from both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Minority in Parliament. On Monday, July 7, 2025, the two political factions are marching to the offices of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra to demand his release.
Hanan, the former Chief Executive Officer of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), was arrested on June 25 as part of EOCO’s probe into alleged economic crimes. His arrest, which also involved his wife and another unnamed individual, was carried out in a coordinated operation between Accra and Tamale.
While his wife was granted bail at GH¢30 million, Hanan remains behind bars—despite claims that the conditions of his GH¢60 million bail have already been met.
Salam Mustapha, the NPP’s National Youth Organiser, condemned EOCO’s conduct in an interview on Channel One TV’s Newsroom, describing it as a blatant abuse of process.
“We’re not asking for favours. If Hanan has committed an offence, take him to court. But don’t detain him after bail conditions have been fulfilled,” he stated.
According to Mustapha, efforts to engage EOCO officials, including Director Raymond Archer, were ignored. “We submitted the evaluation report, and it exceeds the bail conditions. But no one from EOCO responded. Their silence is unacceptable. It feels like deliberate punishment,” he said.
The protestors, including party executives, MPs, and grassroots supporters, say they are determined to confront EOCO leadership and demand accountability for what they see as unlawful detention.
The EOCO detention of Hanan Abdul-Wahab has not only triggered political tension but also raised concerns about transparency and respect for legal procedures in Ghana’s justice system.
