Energy Minister John Jinapor addresses media on nationwide power outage due to ENI gas valve maintenance

Ghanaians across the country will experience a temporary nationwide power outage on Sunday, as part of scheduled maintenance works by the Italian oil and gas company ENI, according to the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor. The minister made the announcement on Wednesday, urging the public to prepare for a brief but necessary disruption.

ENI, one of Ghana’s main gas suppliers, is expected to shut off its gas supply valves temporarily in order to carry out rehabilitation and upgrade works. The goal of the maintenance exercise is to improve the company’s infrastructure and increase gas production capacity to 270 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d), a key milestone in Ghana’s quest for energy security.

The outage, which will last approximately 4 to 6 hours, is part of a broader national strategy aimed at strengthening Ghana’s power generation capacity. The temporary shutdown of gas supply will affect thermal power plants that rely on ENI’s gas, leading to a brief suspension in electricity supply across all 16 regions.

The Ministry of Energy has explained that the maintenance activity is being undertaken as a preventive measure to avoid larger system failures in the future. Officials insist that such strategic interventions are essential for long-term stability, especially as Ghana seeks to modernize its energy infrastructure and increase renewable energy adoption.

Minister Jinapor emphasized that while the blackout may cause temporary inconvenience to households and businesses, the long-term benefits outweigh the short-term disruption. He appealed to the general public to remain calm, cooperate with utility providers, and avoid spreading misinformation about the outage.

The Energy Ministry also assured citizens that technicians and engineers will work diligently to complete the valve maintenance within the planned timeframe. Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) have been tasked with updating the public through real-time channels to ensure clarity and transparency throughout the process.
