AdubianewsControversy has erupted in the Ablekuma North Constituency after Trobu Member of Parliament, Gloria Owusu, made bold claims during a campaign rally, warning voters that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) intends to legalise LGBTQ+ rights in Ghana if it gains additional parliamentary seats.
Addressing constituents during the rally, the MP urged them to reject the NDC and instead support New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate Akua Afriyie. She alleged that giving former President John Mahama two more seats in Parliament would open the door to the legalisation of homosexuality in the country.
She further accused the NDC of hypocrisy, noting that while the party previously accused the NPP of attempting to legalise homosexuality during its time in government, it now appears that the NDC itself is pushing that agenda.
The remarks have sparked intense discussion, with some critics labeling the comments as fear-mongering and divisive. However, supporters argue that her comments reflect concerns held by many religious and traditional Ghanaians who strongly oppose any form of LGBTQ+ recognition.
The claim that the NDC will legalise LGBTQ+ in Ghana comes amid heightened political tensions as both parties intensify campaigns ahead of the upcoming elections. LGBTQ+ issues remain highly controversial in Ghana, where public opinion remains overwhelmingly opposed to same-sex relationships.
There has been no official response from the NDC regarding the MP’s comments as of the time of reporting. The party has not tabled any bills or policies indicating a shift in stance on LGBTQ+ legislation.
The development adds to growing concerns about the role of misinformation and emotional rhetoric in Ghana’s political discourse, especially around deeply sensitive social issues.
