Voting is currently underway in 19 polling stations across the Ablekuma North Constituency as the Electoral Commission (EC) conducts a re-run of the parliamentary election to determine the winner of the disputed seat.
At the Methodist Church Odokor (1) polling station, 22 out of 464 registered voters had cast their ballots by 7:58 a.m., according to the Presiding Officer. Reports from other centres indicate a steady voter turnout, with constituents arriving early to take part in the critical exercise.
Both parliamentary candidates, Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), have been seen at various voting centres engaging with constituents and observing proceedings. The voting process has so far been peaceful and orderly, with no incidents of violence or disruption reported.
The Ablekuma North re-run follows months of tension stemming from the December 2024 general elections, during which results for the parliamentary seat were hotly contested. Allegations of irregularities and inconsistencies in vote tabulation led to numerous petitions and a political standoff between the two major parties. The EC ultimately ruled that a re-run in 19 polling stations was necessary due to discrepancies that could affect the final outcome.
As a result of the unresolved election, Ablekuma North has remained without a sitting Member of Parliament. Today’s vote is expected to finally settle the matter and restore parliamentary representation to the constituency, pending the final declaration of results by the Electoral Commission.
