Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government over what he described as an unfair and disappointing cocoa producer price for the 2025/2026 crop season.
Speaking on Adom TV’s Badwam, Mr. Boadu said the newly announced GH₵3,228.75 per 64kg bag falls far short of expectations and does not reflect the government’s own pre-election promises.
“Before they came to power, they estimated 70% of the FOB price to be around GH₵6,000 to GH₵7,000. If the NPP had paid that amount, would the NDC reduce it now that the cedi has gained strength?” he asked.
Mr. Boadu also questioned the real beneficiaries of the cedi’s recent appreciation, arguing that while importers may benefit, cocoa farmers and exporters are left worse off.
“When the cedi gains strength, importers benefit, not exporters or cocoa farmers. They are the worst hit,” he asserted.
He further expressed concern that the unfavourable pricing may drive many cocoa farmers to give up farming altogether.
“The farmers are disappointed and sad. Many may be forced to sell their land for illegal mining because the current prices are not favourable,” Boadu warned.
Mr. Boadu urged the government to initiate transparent and fact-based conversations on cocoa pricing, instead of what he described as a narrative of dishonesty.
“The government must engage in honest and well-informed discussions rather than ignorance and dishonesty,” he concluded.
His remarks add to the growing political debate over cocoa pricing in Ghana, with opposing camps defending and attacking the newly announced GH₵5,040 per tonne (or GH₵3,228.75 per 64kg bag), which the NDC government says reflects 70% of the FOB value.
