AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi team assists in helicopter crash recovery near Adansi Akrofuom

AngloGold Ashanti has expressed deep sorrow following the devastating military helicopter crash that occurred near Adansi Akrofuom in Ghana’s Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6, resulting in the loss of eight lives, including two cabinet ministers and other senior public officials.

In an official statement released on Thursday, the global mining company extended its heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Ghana and pledged full support for national recovery efforts.

“AngloGold Ashanti pledges its full support for ongoing national efforts to respond to the incident,” the statement read. “We are actively working with authorities on the ground to assist in ongoing recovery operations, including providing logistical and technical support from our nearby Obuasi operations.”

The victims were reportedly traveling to Obuasi to attend the launch of a responsible mining and skills development initiative, a project closely tied to sustainable mining practices and local community upliftment.

AngloGold Ashanti CEO, Alberto Calderon, also shared his condolences, describing the incident as deeply painful for the company and its employees.

“This tragedy has deeply affected all of us at AngloGold Ashanti. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those impacted by this horrific accident,” Calderon said. “We stand ready to be of assistance wherever we are required.”

Given the proximity of the company’s Obuasi operations to the crash site, AngloGold Ashanti is expected to play a key logistical role in ongoing support activities, particularly in areas such as equipment provision, transportation, and on-the-ground coordination with emergency response teams.

As Ghana continues to mourn this national tragedy, AngloGold Ashanti’s response highlights the crucial role of private sector partners in national emergencies.
