Crowd gathers to siphon fuel after tanker overturns at Nkawkaw on Accra–Kumasi highway

Another fuel tanker has overturned on the Accra–Kumasi highway, this time in Nkawkaw, spilling its contents across the road and attracting large crowds.

Eyewitnesses say hundreds of residents, some arriving with tricycles, gallons, and other containers, flocked to the scene to siphon the fuel despite repeated safety warnings. Emergency service crews were present, but many locals ignored calls to keep a safe distance from the highly flammable spill.

The dangerous scramble has raised concerns among safety officials, who warn that any spark or heat source could trigger a deadly explosion. This incident adds to a growing list of fuel-related accidents on major highways, often followed by risky attempts by residents to collect the spilled product.

Authorities are yet to confirm the cause of the accident or whether the driver and crew sustained any injuries.
