AdubianewsA major power relief has arrived in Obuasi as the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has successfully commissioned a new 33kV sub-transmission feeder to boost supply to the area.
The project, energized on August 24, 2025, follows months of disruptions caused by a fire outbreak that damaged Ghana Grid Company Limited’s (GRIDCo) transformer serving the Obuasi Bulk Supply Point (BSP).
The commissioning brings an end to supply challenges that left thousands of homes and businesses in Obuasi and surrounding communities grappling with unstable electricity.
During the crisis, ECG deployed a standby team of engineers who travelled weekly between Kumasi and Obuasi to manage technical issues and sustain supply.
In just six weeks, the engineers, working closely with GRIDCo and contractors, managed to retire the company’s 11kV cables and replace them with new 33kV cables connected to GRIDCo’s gantry and ECG’s GIS panels at the Obuasi Substation. This transition significantly enhances network resilience and capacity.
At the commissioning ceremony, General Manager of Ashanti Sub-Transmission, Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher, praised the collaborative effort that made the project possible. “What we have achieved in Obuasi is proof of the power of collaboration and sacrifice. Our engineers, GRIDCo, contractors, and even AngloGold Ashanti, who supported some communities with power from their dedicated transformer during the crisis, all played a part. Today, we can confidently assure Obuasi and its surrounding areas of a stable and reliable electricity supply. This project is not just about power lines and transformers; it is about keeping homes lit, businesses thriving, and industries running,” he said.
Ing. Fletcher also extended his appreciation to the teams from Ashanti Sub-Transmission, Ashanti South, GRIDCo, the contractor, and AngloGold Ashanti for their joint support.
With the feeder now fully operational, residents and businesses in Obuasi can look forward to a more stable, efficient, and reliable power supply.
