AdubianewsThe Convenor of FixTheCountry, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has unveiled plans for a vigil and a public march to protest the ongoing destruction of Ghana’s environment by illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, September 15, 2025, Barker-Vormawor disclosed that the vigil will take place on Sunday, September 21, at Revolution Square in Accra. The demonstration, he explained, is meant to highlight the urgent need for collective action against the environmental crisis caused by galamsey.
Framing the issue as more than just politics, Barker-Vormawor described the fight as both a moral and spiritual duty. “The responsibility to protect and preserve the environment is by divine assignment, ours as a people,” he wrote.
He emphasized that galamsey is not a partisan issue. “Our responsibility to end galamsey does not end at elections. Nor does it begin after our party loses one. This is bigger than petty politics,” he stated.
The vigil will be followed by a public march on Monday, September 22, which is a national holiday. According to Barker-Vormawor, the march is intended to sustain public pressure and draw attention to what he described as an “environmental crisis of urgent proportions.”
He urged citizens from all walks of life to join the events and demonstrate their commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources.
FixTheCountry has consistently criticized successive governments for failing to address illegal mining effectively, often blaming political interference for weak enforcement. Barker-Vormawor’s latest call, however, seeks to transform public frustration into visible civic action.
“On Sunday 21st September, we will have a vigil at the Revolution Square, and on Monday 22nd (a holiday), there will be a march, calling attention to the urgency of our environmental crisis,” his post concluded.
