Central Regional Minister Eduamoah Okyere speaks on galamsey fight

Central Regional Minister Eduamoah Ekow Panyin Okyere has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ending illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, in the region.

Addressing journalists in Accra on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, Mr. Okyere disclosed that the Regional Security Council, with backing from the central government, is intensifying efforts to clamp down on illegal miners whose activities have already forced the closure of several water treatment plants.

“The fight against galamsey is not something that one person can handle; it should be a collective effort. So, I employ all of us to come on board and pull our strength to ensure that it is done,” he said.

The Minister stressed that beyond enforcement, citizen cooperation is critical to securing Ghana’s water bodies and environment. He warned that without a change in public attitudes, especially among those who view galamsey as a quick way to earn money, the menace would persist.

“Right now, it has become an attitudinal issue, where people think that the way to make money is to go into the water body to find gold. So, I think the government is doing its best, but the citizens will have to change their attitude so that we can all get our water clean,” he added.

Mr. Okyere further noted that lasting success in the anti-galamsey campaign depends on unity and collaboration. He urged residents, traditional leaders, and community groups to join forces with government in ensuring a sustainable future.
