President Mahama declares three days of national mourning for Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, honoring her lifelong service to women and national development.

The Government of Ghana has declared three days of national mourning following the passing of former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings. The decision was announced by President John Dramani Mahama on Friday, stating that the mourning period will run from Friday, October 24, to Sunday, October 26, 2025.

In a statement issued on behalf of the government, President Mahama directed that all national flags be flown at half-mast across public institutions, diplomatic missions, and government facilities both in Ghana and abroad in honor of the late First Lady.

“This is in honor of her memory and in recognition of her distinguished service to our nation,” the statement read. Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who served as First Lady from 1981 to 2001, was celebrated for her leadership in women’s empowerment, child welfare, and social development through the 31st December Women’s Movement.

Her tireless advocacy helped shape policies on women’s rights and economic participation, particularly during Ghana’s transition into democratic governance. The statement described her as a dedicated public servant whose impact “remains deeply woven into the country’s social progress,” reflecting her lifelong commitment to improving livelihoods and opportunities for women nationwide.

The government extended its deepest condolences to the Rawlings family, her children, members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and all who mourned her passing. “The Government extends its deepest condolences to the family, her children, and all who mourn this irreplaceable loss. May her soul rest in perfect peace,” the statement concluded.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon by the family in consultation with the state.
