A number of New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency and polling station executives who are temporarily outside Ghana have formally petitioned the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to overturn the decision to suspend proxy voting in the January presidential primaries.
The suspension, announced by the Chairman of the Elections Committee, has triggered widespread concerns among party members abroad who say they will be unable to participate in the internal elections despite being active office holders.
The petitioning executives—made up of members studying and working abroad- say the new directive amounts to a direct attempt to silence their voices. They argue that the party’s constitution provides clear guidelines for proxy voting, and once those criteria are satisfied, no internal committee has the authority to revoke that right.
Their petition, addressed to the National Chairman through the General Secretary, insists that the suspension is not only unconstitutional but also fundamentally undemocratic. According to the group, the decision threatens to disenfranchise legitimate party officials simply because they are outside the country temporarily.
The executives further argued that the move contradicts basic democratic principles and could undermine the unity and credibility of a party seeking to return to power. They added that from a financial and strategic standpoint, alienating committed members abroad, many of whom contribute significantly to party activities, would be a costly mistake.
They stressed that the party, especially in opposition, needs to strengthen participation rather than shrink the voting base. The suspension of proxy voting, they said, sends the wrong signal and places unnecessary burdens on executives who cannot easily travel to Ghana.
For these reasons, the petitioners are urging NEC to immediately reverse the directive and restore the proxy voting system as outlined in the party’s constitution.
