Government is taking a major step towards transforming Ghana’s healthcare delivery system with plans to establish a centralised national health intelligence database to improve transparency, efficiency and evidence-based decision-making.
The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, disclosed this at the second edition of the World Health Expo Leaders, held at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra on December 9. He said the initiative reflects government’s broader commitment to using digital innovation as a catalyst for reform within the health sector.
According to the minister, Ghana has reached a stage where technology is no longer optional but central to national development, particularly in healthcare delivery.
“At this stage of our development, digital innovation has become the driving force behind our transformation,” he noted, adding that the proposed system will enable real-time data analysis and strengthen accountability across the entire health value chain.
Mr Akandoh explained that a national digital health integration layer is currently being developed to serve as the foundation onto which all existing and future digital health platforms will connect. This, he said, will guarantee national ownership and control of health data while ensuring that information generated is used to directly improve the wellbeing of citizens.
He further stated that the digital reforms are already enhancing governance within the health sector, streamlining operations and enabling quicker, more informed responses to emerging health needs.
“The system is allowing us to track diseases faster, deploy resources more efficiently, and hold ourselves to higher standards of performance and transparency,” he said.
Emphasising the long-term vision behind the initiative, the minister stressed that technology is central to building a resilient healthcare system.
“Digital transformation is not an accessory to our reforms; it is the backbone of a modern, sovereign and people-centred health system,” he added.
