The National Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association has pledged to support the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) in intensifying the fight against illegal mining, especially on major water bodies in the Ashanti Region.
According to the Association, its task force has recorded significant progress in efforts to clamp down on illegal mining along the Offin Upper Stream, an area widely known as a hotspot for unauthorised mining. For several weeks, members have engaged communities along the Offin River, where illegal miners have severely damaged the water source.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, December 11, President of the Association Michael Kwadwo Peprah said the initiative is aimed at strengthening the government’s broader campaign against illegal mining.
He commended the government for providing budgetary support to NAIMOS, but stressed the need for intensified community sensitisation to enhance public cooperation.
Mr. Peprah noted:
“NAIMOS alone cannot fight galamsey. What is needed is more sensitisation. This will help safeguard various water bodies, lands, and water reserves from destruction.”
The Association says it will continue working with state agencies to help restore damaged water bodies and prevent further environmental degradation.
