ECOWAS Council endorses John Mahama as sole AU Chair candidate for 2027

The ECOWAS Council of Ministers, meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, has unanimously endorsed former Ghanaian president John Dramani Mahama as West Africa’s sole candidate for Chairperson of the African Union when the rotating position returns to the region in 2027.

Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the development on Friday, December 12, explaining that the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State is expected to formally adopt the declaration on Sunday. He expressed Ghana’s gratitude for the regional bloc’s support.

“Ghana is exceedingly grateful to ECOWAS for the confidence and support for our beloved visionary and Pan-African President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama,” he wrote.

Understanding the AU Leadership Structure

The African Union’s leadership is divided between two major roles:

  • The AU Chairperson (Rotating Head of State) – A one-year political leadership role held by a sitting president from a member state on a rotational basis among regions.

  • The Chairperson of the AU Commission (AUC) – A four-year term for the administrative head of the AU, responsible for day-to-day operations, finances, policy execution, and representing the Union legally.

The AUC Chairperson operates as the organisation’s CEO, reporting to the Executive Council and driving the AU’s long-term agenda.

How the AUC Chairperson Is Elected

The election for the AUC Chairperson follows a rigorous, competitive process:

  1. Pre-screening: Candidates undergo an assessment by a Panel of Eminent Africans, which evaluates their qualifications, leadership experience, and vision.

  2. Regional nomination: Each African regional bloc submits its preferred candidates. For example, the Eastern Region handled nominations for the 2025 cycle.

  3. Public debates: In recent years, aspirants have participated in televised debates to outline their strategies for continental development.

  4. Election by AU Assembly: Heads of State vote by secret ballot, and a two-thirds majority is required for a candidate to be elected.

While the rotating AU Chairperson sets the political tone and represents the continent, the AUC Chairperson provides operational leadership, ensuring effective implementation of the AU’s programmes and policies.
