Ghana has successfully recovered more than $15 million from an international organised online crime syndicate that targeted citizens through fraudulent cryptocurrency investment schemes.
The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, disclosed this at the Government’s Accountability Series held on Thursday, describing the recovery as a significant breakthrough in the country’s fight against cybercrime.
According to Dr Ayine, the operation was made possible through coordinated efforts by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and other investigative bodies, which relied on Ghana’s existing legal framework to trace, freeze, and retrieve virtual assets concealed in foreign jurisdictions.
He revealed that on November 19, 2025, Zodia Custody converted the seized crypto assets linked to the criminal enterprise into cash and transferred $15,191,730.13 into EOCO’s exhibit account.
“The criminal enterprise deliberately targeted Ghanaians, defrauded them, and laundered the proceeds through cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and USDT,” Dr Ayine stated.
He described the recovery as a major win for local law enforcement agencies, noting that funds illegally siphoned out of the country have now been successfully returned.
“Millions of funds which were looted out of the country have been successfully brought back into our motherland,” he emphasised.
Dr Ayine further assured the public that steps are being taken to identify the victims, adding that arrangements will be made to ensure affected individuals are compensated.
He said the recovery demonstrates the government’s strong commitment to tackling transnational cybercrime, tightening oversight in the digital and financial sectors, and upholding the rule of law.
