The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced that vehicles currently using Departure from Port (DP) stickers and DV plates may continue to do so following the postponement of the rollout of the new vehicle licence plates.

The nationwide rollout, which was scheduled to begin on January 2, 2026, was delayed after proposed amendments to the Road Traffic Regulation, 2012 (L.I. 2180) were not passed before Parliament went on recess on December 19, 2025.

In a statement, the Authority said vehicle owners using DP stickers and DV plates may continue using them until a new deadline is communicated.

“Owners of vehicles currently using DP stickers and DV plates may continue using them up to a time limit which will be communicated by the DVLA in due course. This measure ensures continuity and compliance with existing road traffic regulations,” the statement said.

The DVLA stressed that the temporary measure does not affect its long-term plan to introduce modern RFID-enabled licence plates, which are intended to enhance vehicle traceability, enforcement, and road safety nationwide.

“We remain committed to rolling out the new plates as soon as the legislative requirements are met,” the Authority assured.

The DVLA thanked the public for their cooperation and urged vehicle owners to continue complying with existing licensing requirements while awaiting further updates on the new system.

Court Action by VEMAG

Meanwhile, the Vehicle Embossment Association of Ghana (VEMAG) has filed an injunction application at the High Court in Accra, seeking to restrain the DVLA from rolling out a digital or any new vehicle number plate registration system beginning January 2026.

The suit was filed by BEMENCO Embossment Ltd and 26 other companies, all members of VEMAG. The application, filed on Monday, December 22, 2025, seeks to halt the introduction of digitalised or new registration plates until the court determines the substantive issues in the case.
