Former Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom, Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi, has criticised the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) over what he describes as worsening job losses and rising unemployment in the country.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on December 31, 2025, Dr Kissi said Ghana’s biggest challenge at the moment is unemployment, noting that more than 1.3 million people are currently without jobs. He argued that the situation becomes even more concerning when informal layoffs and unreported job losses under the current administration are factored in.
He expressed disappointment with the government’s much-publicised 24-hour economy policy, which he said was expected to expand employment through additional shifts and longer working hours but has instead coincided with widespread layoffs.
“For a government that promised a 24-hour economy, one would expect more jobs, not job losses,” Dr Kissi stated, adding that Ghana has, in his view, been “scandalised” within the first year of the NDC administration.
Dr Kissi also raised concerns about public sector finances and the management of tax revenues. While acknowledging that taxes paid by citizens are paid into the Consolidated Fund, he argued that the government still exercises discretion over how these funds are allocated and how salaries are paid.
He questioned the decision to abolish certain taxes, including the COVID-19 levy, at a time when nurses and doctors are reportedly owed several months of salary arrears.
According to him, the COVID-19 levy was introduced to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and improve service delivery and should not be discarded simply because of its name.
Highlighting challenges within the health sector, Dr Kissi cited reports of ambulances operating without basic necessities such as oxygen, a situation he described as embarrassing for the country.
He added that even if funds from the COVID-19 levy were misused under the previous Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration, the current government now has the responsibility to ensure that available revenues are properly utilised to address urgent national needs.
“Now that you are in power and receiving these revenues, it is your duty to appropriate them responsibly and use them where they are most needed,” he stressed.
