President John Dramani Mahama has strongly criticized the rising incidents of violence against teachers, expressing deep concern over how a recent assault case involving a teacher at Kade Senior High School was handled.
The President made the remarks while speaking at the Delegates Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), where he described the reported attack on a teacher by students as unacceptable and criminal.
The incident, which went viral on social media in October 2025, allegedly showed students physically assaulting a Mathematics teacher after he refused to allow them to cheat during an examination. The disturbing footage sparked public outrage and renewed calls for stronger protection for teachers.
According to reports referenced by the President, the matter was reported to the police, but the case did not proceed through the full legal process. Instead, the parents of the students involved reportedly reached an out-of-court settlement, leading to the withdrawal of charges after the teacher was compensated.
President Mahama expressed disappointment over the outcome, questioning why the students were not subjected to any formal disciplinary or legal action.
“I watched the video of the Maths teacher being beaten simply because he refused to allow students to cheat, and it showed a dangerous sense of entitlement,” the President said.
He stressed that assault remains a criminal offence, regardless of any compensation paid to the victim. According to him, even if the teacher chose not to pursue the case, the students should have been processed through the justice system.
“At the very least, the children should have been booked and bonded to be of good behaviour for a period. That is how we demonstrate that justice has truly been served,” he added.
President Mahama assured teachers across the country of his unwavering support, stating firmly that attacks on educators would not be tolerated.
“As for assault on teachers, I am with you 100 per cent. We will deal with it,” he declared.
